Beware of Energy Drinks
Popular energy drinks later turned out to be higher than that of caffeinated coffee.Caffeine in combination with other elements is even more risky, especially when mixed with alcohol as used in energy drinks, as quoted by Reuters Life! "What can we know now of energy drinks is that the drink contains a quarter cup of sugar and contains more caffeine of a cup of black coffee, "said John Higgins of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston who led the study published in the medical journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings this month.
Caffeine content in energy drinks ranges from 70-200mg every 16 ounces of presentation. In comparison, 8-ounce cup of coffee contains 40-150mg of caffeine, depending on how the coffee is brewed."Even more alarming, often times the constituent materials are not included in the label - such as guarana herbal supplements, amino acids taurine, and herbs, minerals, and vitamins that may interplay with caffeine," said Higgins told Reuters.His concern is how to mix ingredients that affect the heart rate, blood pressure, and even mental conditions, especially when consumed in large quantities when consumed with alcohol or athletes.Higgins and colleagues reviewed medical literature on energy drinks and its constituent materials between 1976-2010 and found little research on the effects of it.Several small studies, usually of young adults who are active in physical activity suggests that energy drinks can increase blood pressure and heart rate."But the evidence of more serious effects such as heart attacks, seizures, and death has not been proven," they said.Norway, Denmark, and France banned Red Bull after a study on rats showed "the rats fed taurine showed bizarre behavior such as anxiety and suicide.""We are not rats, but the consumption of these beverages have shown a positive association with high-risk behavior," wrote Higgis and colleagues.Energy drinks are often promoted and used by athletes to get 'extra boost'.But Higgins and his group noted by way of caffeine and other substances that affect the human body, there is a risk that energy drinks can cause serious dehydration to users."The possibility of dehydration and increased blood pressure makes the water or sports drink with a low octane containing electrolytes, minerals and carbohydrates, a better choice," he added.Those who are not athletes should not drink more than one energy drink in a day, do not mix with alcohol, and drink plenty of water after exercise.Those who have hypertension should not drink energy drinks. While those with an illness such as heart disease should consult a physician before consuming the drink."The rules of energy drinks can be a long way to overcome problems that might occur," added Higgins."Industry can mix anything in the drink, making the ads attractive as possible and can consume just about anything. But if the situation continues like this, you will get into trouble, "he said.
