School children should spend at least an hour a day exercising to improve school performance and reduce obesity. A U.S. study showed that elementary students are more physically active tend to have better test scores than classmates who are less fit.
"Regular exercise can improve students' academic skills by increasing the flow of oxygen to the brain," says Dr Aric Sigman, a member of the Society of Biology as reported by The Telegraph, Monday (03/12/2012).
Dr Sigman suggests that a quality physical education also has a long-term impact on children's education than the regular classroom. This statement was put forward to address concerns the increasing number of children who spend time sitting as glued to the television, internet and video games.
Previous research shows that nearly 9 out of 10 children failed to spend 60 minutes every day for exercise. Dr. Sigman insists that physical activity is key to reducing obesity in children while increasing his intelligence.
"Children should spend at least an hour a day doing some physical activity. Heavy physical activity are much better than it was. Do not worry that this routine will reduce the performance due to less time-consuming to learn," said Dr Sigman.
A U.S. study compared the capacity of the brain and test scores between two groups of children aged 9-10 years. One group doing more physical activity than other groups. Findings indicate that students are more fit to have the brain capacity 12 percent greater than their peers and get a score better on tests of spatial reasoning and cognitive.
Research on teenage boys in Sweden also found that students are more fit tend to have higher IQs and go to college to university.
"Physical activity can help children's cognitive process by increasing blood flow and oxygen to the brain. It increases levels of norepinephrine and endorphins to reduce stress and improve mood, increase growth factors that help create new nerve cells and support the synaptic connections of brain cells that are important in the learning process, "said Dr Sigman.
